Materials:
- KWL Chart
- The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
- Cause and Effect Cards
- The Giving Tree Cause and Effect Worksheet
- Definitions of Cause and Effect
- Pencils
- 3x5 Notecards
Building Background/Activate Prior Knowledge:
- I will present the students with the KWL chart about trees
- I will ask the students to fill in the K (what they already know) and W (what they want to know) sections of their KWL charts
- After the students have completed this task I will ask for volunteers to give their information of what they know and would like to know about trees and write it on the front board
Comprehensible Input:
- I will then read The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
- While I am reading I will ask questions
- After I am done reading the book the students will be asked to return to their seats
Guided Practice:
- I will present the students with the words cause and effect
- I will ask the students of their previous knowledge and understanding of cause and effect
- I will tell students the definition of cause and effect as write them on the white board
- As a class we will practice cause and effect with the Cause and Effect cards
Independent Practice:
- Students will be asked to complete The Giving Tree Cause and Effect Worksheet
- I will walk around to make sure students aren't having any trouble
- Once the class seems to be finishing the worksheet we will come together as a class and review our answers
Assessment:
- Each table group will be assigned a scene from the book
- The students will be asked to work together to create a mini skit on their part of the story
- After students are given a half hour they will be asked to perform their skit for the class
- After each skit is performed the students in the audience will be asked to determine the cause and the effect of the scene
Closing:
- The students will be handed a 3x5 notecard
- They will be asked to write down an example of cause and effect
- After the students have completed the mini activity they will put their notecards in the center of their table group
